Occasion

Pivot a failing online service technology company

My most recent project was a consultancy for a Chicago-based company named Occasion that sells business scheduling software to service businesses. The biggest problem facing the business was a lack of growth opportunity from their existing verticals of cooking classes, pottery schools, art studios, etc. Not to mention, the pandemic seriously impacted the long term business prospects of these mom & pop shops selling local experiences. With revenue on the platform falling from around 250M to 35M, I was brought in to reshape the business structure & take Occasion from 35M to 1B in sales on the platform. At the beginning of any project I like to take a 1000 ft view of, not only the business, but also the broader industry. With Occasion, I knew it was going to be about pivoting the product to increase the total addressable market. I always start my process by drawing correlations & identifying trends specific to the industry I am working with.

Unfortunately, I am not able to discuss the platform in detail yet. What I can say is, in the end, the Occasion team loved the platform direction. I built out a roadmap for what the platform should look like, how the platform could launch successfully, & how to target these new users. Since then, Occasion has hired a CTO to build out the technical side of the platform with an estimate to launch my new platform in 2 to 2.5 years. Check back later for an update once this project comes to life.
